What is a domain name and hosting and why do I need them?
You can’t have a website without a domain name and hosting. Think of it like a house – the domain name is the address of the house so that we know where to find it, while the hosting is the land that the house is built on, it holds all the necessary elements to make the house complete.
The domain name for our Burst Online website, the one you’re on now, is burstonline.com.au, which can be found in the address bar at the top of the browser. Domain names can be registered as .com, .com.au, .net and many more. Domain names are also used in custom email addresses, such as firstname.lastname@example.org. The domain name needs to point/connect to the hosting space where the website is located. Not much use having an address for a block of land that doesn’t exist.
The hosting space is where all of the website files are located, along with other technical configuration like databases and connecting custom email accounts. Hosting comes in a range of plans in terms of storage size and speed.
Domain and hosting spaces are purchased separately and need to be renewed each year. Take a look at our Domain Names and Hosting page for more.
